How An Audio Logo Can Help Your Brand.

If you close your eyes and think about Netflix or McDonald’s, you’ll probably hear a sound rather than see a picture. That brief burst of sound (the “ta-dum” or the “ba da ba ba bah”) is an audio logo: a few seconds of sound designed to be immediately identifiable as a brand, just as a wordmark or a colour scheme is.

A sound logo (it is also known as a sonic logo or sonic brand) is similar to a visual logo in that it is used consistently across all various points of contact and, as a result, people come to associate that sound with your brand. The difference is that sound can reach individuals even when they are not looking at a screen, like when they are in a car, using earbuds, on hold, or during a podcast ad.

Genumark Now Has Its Own Sound.

We recently added a sonic identity to our brand toolkit. Genumark’s Graphic Designer, John Guleng, composed original audio logos for both Genumark and Genumark Camp Co., giving each brand a sound as distinct as its visual identity.

The Genumark logo began with a familiar reference point before developing in a different direction. With Camp Co., John retained the same musical base but completely altered the instrumentation to match the brand’s outdoor and nostalgic atmosphere.

As John explained, the main idea came from Netflix’s ‘Tudum‘, but since he wanted to produce something a bit more melodic, he based it on an inverted G chord (G for Genumark, naturally). In the case of Camp Co., he aimed to achieve that typical campfire atmosphere by using the same notes but plucking them on the guitar, with a crackling fire sound placed just below the melody.

Why an Audio Logo Matters.

Sound is processed differently than images, and the research on sonic branding backs that up.

  • Ipsos found that sonic brand cues were 8.53 times more powerful than visual brand assets on the same performance measures.
  • A study jointly conducted by Audacy and Veritonic on more than 100 radio and podcast advertisements showed that sonic branding improved ad recall by 17 percent on radio and 14 percent on podcasts, along with similar increases in purchase intent.
  • Media Village research found audiences are 7.5 times more likely to correctly identify a brand from its audio logo when the brand name is built into the sound itself, whether that’s through lyrics, a spoken name, or a musical reference tied to the brand, like the G chord anchoring the Genumark logo.

The takeaway is consistent across every study: a well-built sound sticks in memory in a way a static image often can’t, and it keeps working in places a visual logo never reaches.

Putting an Audio Logo to Work.

An audio logo earns its value through repetition and placement. A few places to build yours in:

  • Video content Open or close every video, reel, and ad with your sound so it signals that the content is yours before a single word is spoken.
  • Voice and smart speaker platforms As more searches and purchases happen through voice assistants, a recognizable sound becomes your handshake in an environment with no visuals.
  • Hold music and phone systems Replace generic hold music with your audio logo woven into the loop, so even a customer service call reinforces the brand.
  • Events and trade shows Trigger your sound when someone walks into your booth or completes an activation, pairing an unexpected sensory moment with your brand.
  • Podcasts and audio ads Bookend sponsor reads or spots with your logo, so listeners connect the message back to you immediately.

The idea gets even more interesting when you consider how branded merchandise can bring that sound into the physical world. For example, a branded Bluetooth speaker handed out at an event or included in a client’s gift box puts your sound directly into people’s hands and, quite literally, gives your audio logo a way to be played. Similarly, branded earbuds, portable chargers with a QR code that leads to your sound, or even a custom doorbell chime for retail locations turn a static logo into something people can interact with.
